Hands on Worksheet

STEP ONE: Get a sip address

This is like getting an emial address, it can be one from your organisation, or an address from a provider similar to what hotmail does for email.

Your own identification allocated to you for this tutorial is:
Username:
Password:
sip address sip:@aarnet.edu.au
E.164 address

Alternatively you can get your own sip account from several providers, such as:

IPTEL www.iptel.org
Select "My Account" then select "Register" and fill in the form. Once you have recieved your email confirmation your IPTEL sip address becomes active.

Free Word Dial (FWD) http://www.freeworlddialup.com/
Select from the top right hand side of the page, then select "Sign in" from the third bullet point in Step 1, and fill in the forms. Take note of the FWD Number

STEP TWO: GET A SOFTWARE CLIENT or IP TELEPHONE (UA)

There is a great reference on the FWD web site to get and configure UAs, and there is a great list on IPTEL.

Software client: Windows Messenger

Get from

www.microsoft.com
Download "Windows Messenger" from www.microsoft.com NOT Messenger!

Configure http://www.aarnet.edu.au/events/conferences/2004/sip/UAs/WindowsMessenger/index.html

Sign-in name:
@aarnet.edu.au

User name:

Password:

Software client: X-lite

Get from www.xten.com
Configure http://www.aarnet.edu.au/events/conferences/2004/sip/UAs/X-lite/

User name:

Password:

Domain/Realm:
aarnet.edu.au

IP Telephone: Cisco 7960 IP Telephone:

The password is AAA on the AARNet phones. The default password is cisco.

IP Telephone: Avaya SIP Phone:

Use a web browser to browse to the phone. The rest is rather simple.

Default username is admin with a password of barney

STEP THREE: TRY THESE EXERCISES

Configure some UAs

  1. Add your username/password to one of the spare lines on an IP Phone
  2. Add your username/password to a line on a Software UA like X-lite or Windows Messenger, or...

Make some phone calls:

  1. Call a phone in the Tutorial using its (E164) telephone number and its sip address.
  2. Make a call to a test number in Australia, one of the "talking weather numbers".
  3. Make/receive test calls from sip domains outside of yours, ie between AARNet, IPTEL and FWD.

Decode, or just watch the protocol:

  1. Load and use Ethereal on your PC to see the sip packets for your calls. Get ethereal from http://www.ethereal.com/
  2. Look at the ngrep log on the AARNet sip server here: http://202.158.196.132/SIPLog/ to see the sip packets for your calls. This is a script written by Stephen.Kingham@aarnet.edu.au using NGREP from http://ngrep.sourceforge.net/
