Polycom IP Phone supports both but prefers ftp becasue it uses the timestamps to figure out if there is a newer file to download. If you use tftp then the filename must changed so that the phone realises the file needs to be updated.

You should unzip the attached file (including subdirectories) and place it on an ftp server that will be accesable by the phone. Also place the attached bootrom.ld file into the ftp root directory.
Next, power on the phone and choose the setup funtion before it tries to boot. Configure these items at least:
On the ftp server copy the 000000000000.cfg file to a new file name where the 0s are replaced by the MAC address of the relevant phone.
Edit this new file (it is an xml file) and change the config file name phone1.cfg to a name of your choice to represent each phone.
Copy the phone1.cfg file to the file name you chose above and edit it (again it is an xml file) to contain the relevant sip registration information.
You can edit the ipmid.cfg file as well (it is common to all phones) to configure items like the ntp server address.
filename = 000000000000.cfg
Thats 12 zeros.
Example with all the available parameters:
< APPLICATION APP_FILE_PATH="sip.ld"
CONFIG_FILES="phone1.cfg, sip .cfg , ipmid .cfg"
M ISC_FILES="" LOG_FILE_DIRECTORY=""/>
The same parameters can be set in all the config files. Config files are processed in order and the first file takes precedence.
filename: <mac address>.cfg
Alpha characters must be in lower case.
